Dr. Campos offers several evidence-based social skills groups for children, adolescents, and young adults. Dr. Campos also intends to offer social skills groups for preschool-aged children and for children with anxiety. For questions about enrollment in the following groups, please contact Dr. Campos directly.
Social Skills Group for Children (ages 7-10) – parent participation is required
Dr. Campos offers Children’s Friendship Training, an evidence-based 12-week social skills group for elementary school-aged children (ages 7-10) who have difficulty making and keeping friends. Children in this group learn (i) appropriate conversational skills and how to (ii) make a good first impression and be a good sport, (iii) use play skills and appropriately enter group play, and (iv) effectively manage peer rejection, teasing and bullying. Parents concurrently learn the skills their children are absorbing so that they can better support them in applying these skills at home and in other settings (e.g., school, extracurricular activities, etc.).
Social Skills Group for Adolescents (ages 11-17) – parent participation is required
Dr. Campos offers the Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills (PEERS®), a 14-week group for teens (ages 11-17) on the autism spectrum. The group is also designed for adolescents with anxiety, depression, ADHD and any other social-emotional issues impacting social skill functioning. Parents concurrently attend separate sessions to learn how to support their children to maintain and expand their social networks and to provide feedback through coaching. Specifically, teens will learn how to (i) choose appropriate friends, (ii) use appropriate conversational skills and humor, (iii) handle rejection, teasing and bullying as well as rumors and gossip, (iv) be a good host during get-togethers and use social media appropriately with peers; (v) manage arguments and disagreements, and (vi) change a bad reputation.
Social Skills Group for Young Adults (ages 18-28) – Social Coach attendance is highly recommended
Dr. Campos offers a similar PEERS® 16-week group for young adults (ages 18-28). Young adults learn how to (i) use appropriate conversational skills, (ii) handle conflict and rejection, (iii) have appropriate get-togethers with friends, and (iv) deal with issues related to dating and relationships. Young adults are encouraged to attend every session with a person who can act as a “social coach” for them (e.g., a parent, sibling, job coach, mentor, etc.). The social coach will simultaneously learn the same skills so that he or she can better support the young adult in applying these skills in daily life.
School-based Social Skills Groups
Dr. Campos offers PEERS® directly in the school environment. For more information about school-related consultation and groups, please contact Dr. Campos directly.
